Almost thirty years ago, I stood in a dark cellar in Nuits St. Georges, in the Burgundy region of France. The musty smells were overwhelming. The winemaker plunged his siphon into a large barrel and withdrew his dark wine and dribbled it into my glass. As I took the first taste, I felt the wine’s warmth spread through every vein in my body. It was 9:00 on a Sunday morning. Magic was in the air. I was in love.
Since then I have worked in the wine business, have become a Certified Specialist of Wine, and have passed the Introductory Sommelier Course and Exam. I judge wines each year for the Iowa State Fair, both commercial and amateur. I am a member of the Iowa Quality Wine Consortium and gather occasionally with colleagues to assess quality in Iowa wines.
With each new glass of wine I learn something of the grape and the place where it was grown. Through this blog I will share the wines I discover and enjoy, as I continue my journey through this world of wine.
