J Winery Pinot Noir, A Pairing Mis-pick, And Double Fisting Done Right

Every day is a good day for Pinot Noir, if you ask me.  It’s such a versatile grape, it can accompany almost any kind of food in almost any setting.

So I gave no thought to dinner plans–just opened up this expressive Pinot Noir from J Vineyards. A little cheese and charcuterie plate on a rainy afternoon and I was happy.

But as dinner was being prepared, the aromas wafting from the honey-garlic shrimp, and the roasted spiced cauliflower and chickpeas, and the rich avocado-cilantro dip, filled the kitchen. (Find the recipe here.)

I loved that Pinot Noir, but I knew it was going to be wrong with our dinner.

Well honey, if loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right! What was a Pinot Noir lover to do?

Double fisting was the obvious option.  Please, don’t judge me.

I found a charming Loire Valley Chenin Blanc in my refrigerator, dry and all full of minerals and tropical fruits.  It paired perfectly with the garlic and rich spices of dinner.

I did not forget about my love, the Pinot Noir, no sir.  I sipped it a bit during dinner, then finished up that delicious bottle later with chocolate and a movie.

Win-win.

J Vineyards and Winery was established in 1986 by Judy Jordan, specializing in sparkling wines.  She settled in the Russian River Valley where the cool climate was perfect for growing the varietals needed for high quality, traditional method sparkling wines.

Today her winery is known for its beautifully crafted sparkling wines and Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris varietals, and their ability to pair with a wide variety of foods.

This California Pinot Noir is crafted using 70% grapes from Monterey County, 26% from Sonoma County, and 4% from Santa Barbara County, each county contributing specific attributes to the final blend. Grapes are cold soaked, then fermented in stainless steel tanks.  Once dry, the juice is placed in French and American oak barrels for aging, then finally blended together for a beautiful balance.

THE WINE WOW!

Pretty perfumed notes greet the nose along with ripe black cherries and smoky black pepper spice.

The palate is medium-weight and welcoming, filled with illuminated bright cherry.  Sweet cherry cola notes are present along with red licorice. Cinnamon stick and pepper spice appear on the finish wrapped in energetic acidity and mild tannins.

What’s not to love?

Our shrimp and our roasted cauliflower/chickpea wraps were delicious! Just not so much with my beloved Pinot Noir. A little double-fisting was all it took to be able to enjoy the night with the Pinot Noir included.

THIS IS A WINE WOW! FOR:

Pairing with a cheese and charcuterie plate;

Sipping with a movie and chocolate;

A Pinot Noir drinker who enjoys a rich elegant style with ripe fruits and mild tannin.
