Breca and My Hotel Life

My hotel behavior is different than my at-home behavior.

Shoes up on the furniture!  Sleeping with the bathroom light on.  Up till the wee hours of the morning watching old movies. Drinking wine from a plastic glass!

Whaa??  Hold on there!!

No worries. Not a hotel drinking plastic glass, no sir.  I bring my own plastic glasses!

Govino is my travelling wine glass of choice since it never seems to destroy the aroma and flavor of my wine AND it is lightweight and shatterproof!

I pulled this beauty of a bottle off my store’s shelf and brought it along on a recent trip.

Breca hails from Spain’s Calatayud DO, found in the Erbo River Valley where tributaries create a series of smaller valleys.  Vineyards (or Bodegas) are found in small towns along these river valleys, most at altitudes of 2,500 to 3,500 ft.  Garnacha is the most widely planted grape in this DO (Denominacion de Origen), and that is just what my Breca is–100% Garnacha.

Grapes are hand-harvested and spend 21 months in French oak barrels.

Deep, dark inky color leads to intense aromas of dark berries, tobacco leaf, leather and savory dried herbs.

The palate is dense and chewy with fresh black cherry and plum on the front palate.  Leather appears mid-palate supported by meaty notes and savory herbs.  Solid tannins and dusty earth wrap up the finish of this powerful wine coming in at 15% alcohol.

This powerhouse of a wine needed some food along with it, and being stuck in a hotel room in the middle of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, all I could find was a box of Cheez-Its. Perhaps the “rustic” nature of the crackers made them a good partner with this hearty wine.  Or maybe I just needed to crunch away my jitters from the movie.

A fantastic wine in my Govino plastic glass (it’s actually food-safe/pharmaceutical-grade polymer; that’s plastic, right?), The Birds on my big screen TV, feet up on the bed, and a box of Cheez-Its. Oh, how I love travelling!

Drinking in your hotel room;
Pairing with Cheese crackers or other hotel snacks;
Anyone who enjoys a full-bodied red wine full of earthy character.

    Hey BarbaKay! I replied via my mobile a few days ago but perhaps you never received it? Hmmm… anyway, my Hy-Vee on N. Ankeny Blvd does not deliver. And actually, any Hy-Vee that delivers can not deliver alcohol. Sorry! Thanks for reading!!
