Ca’Momi Cabernet Meets the New Grill

Here is my confession…
I have never touched the grill at my house.  Not once.

But the arrival of a new grill brought excitement to the entire household, especially to the One Who Grills. Friends stopped by, a new gas line was run, beers were poured!

The day of the grill’s maiden voyage brought lots of summer sunshine.

It glinted so brightly off this new cooking apparatus that I was squinting.  Shiny newness waiting for some sizzle.

We decided on steak for the grill’s first time at work. Admittedly I have been drinking lots of light little spritzy wines (see previous posts: Gazela Vinho Verde After the Farmers’ Market, May 12 post; New Age Welcomes Summer, June 22 post). But steak required a bigger wine, so I pulled a new Cabernet from my store’s shelf.

The Ca’Momi Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.

The winery was founded in 2006 by three Italians, who were in the wine business and came to California.  They fell in love with Napa Valley and began a partnership to create the Ca’Momi winery. Ca’Momi means “house of Momi” and is a nod to the name given the family home in Veneto, Italy.

This 2013 vintage uses 100% Napa fruit and 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.  Rich black fruit aromas are completed with spicy cedar and sweet vanilla.  The palate is so rich and plush holding ripe dark fruit flavors.  Black cherry and blackberry blend with chocolate and soft spices.  More juicy fruit and vanilla wrap everything together with a good backbone of round tannins.

The rich flavors of this Cabernet were an able partner to the strength of flavor found in the grilled steak.  Just the right amount of tannins were softened by the bit of fat present in the New York Strip steaks.

Winery owner and winemaker Dario de Conti says, “Food, wine and heart.  It’s really all we ever need.”

Well, that and a new grill, too!
