This Moose is Massive! (Calcareous Vineyard Moose 2009)

It is fitting that I should write about Calcareous wines with the recent visit of Dana Brown, winery owner, to my Hy-Vee store.  Dana hails from Iowa, and travels back and forth between her home here, and her winery in Paso Robles, CA.
I opened the Moose 2009, a Wine Spectator 92-point-rated blend of 88% Syrah and 12% Petit Verdot named “Moose” after Dana’s beloved father, founder of the winery.

Deep, dark, inky purple colors set the expectation.

Massive and intense, the aromas leap from the glass with layer upon layer of juicy blackberry and blueberry, asphalt, smoke, dried berries, cookies (yes, really) and baking spices.

The palate is rich and thick bringing full berry flavors with a hint of chocolate and dried herb, all mingling with firm tannins.

Moose finishes long and memorably!
